The work is split among multiple threads to decrease the computing time. Since phonon scattering is being assessed, each event has a mode and a event_type. The mode is a vector containing the positions and polarizations of the phonons involved in the scattering event and the event_type characterizes the scattering as either absorption (q1 + q2 = q3) or emission (q1 = q2 + q3).
